What is a Play-By-Mail Game? Simply put, it is a game in which
you send your instructions by mail to a Game Master (GM for short)
who runs the game based on your actions and the actions of all
other players. Usually the GM does this by using a computer to
correlate the actions of all the players in the game. Then the
turn results are printed and sent back to you. You don't need
a computer to play. All you need is a pencil! Play-By-Mail Games
(PBM for short) can have almost any theme: Fantasy, World War
II, Gladiator Combat, you name it. Here at Mindgate we
have a particular fondness for Science Fiction.
What makes PBM games so much fun is the number of players that
can be involved in the same game. A single game can have hundreds
of players interacting at the same time! Figuring out your turn
is only a small part of the challenge when you play a PBM game.
Talking to other players, forging alliances, cutting deals, and
making threats are all part of the drama. With so many people
playing, the game develops a society of its own. You'll be making
a lot of new friends.
Are you ready to get in on the excitement? We want to invite
you to join us in playing one of best PBM games around: Stars
of the Dark Well, a science fiction game of epic proportions.
The current game has been in continuous play since 1984 and is
still growing. There are hundreds of star systems, thousands of
planets to explore, and a vast interstellar society in which to
trade.
Stars of the Dark Well is a role playing game. You will
create a character to portray: the commander of your starship.
Your loyal crew will be by your side. Your character will have
distinctive strengths, weaknesses, and background; and as you
play, your character's experience and reputation will grow. Soon
you will be famous (or infamous!). You can be an explorer, a trader,
a pirate, or anything you choose. There is a whole galaxy of opportunities
to choose from.
You want the important details of course...
How much does it cost? The basic setup package for Stars of the
Dark Well is $20.00. That includes the rules, your setup turn,
and your first regular turn. After that, turns are $5.00 each.
OR... you can download the rules for FREE, and between now
and January 31st, we will pay your first $5.00 ship setup
fee. That means that you can join the game and see what it's all
about for FREE! You like free. We like free. Free is good.
Turn frequency is once every two weeks, which is to say that turn
deadlines are two weeks apart. The next turn deadline is printed
on every turn printout. So as soon as you receive your setup turn
you will know when the next turn is due.
Ready to join? Download the Excel setup sheet. Once you fill
it out with your choices you can email it to mindgate@macnexus.org
as an attachment, or print it and mail it. If an Excel spreadsheet
doesn't work for you, get an Adobe PDF version by clicking HERE.
